(Pittsburgh-Friday, December 19, 2003) After a top-to-bottom renovation, Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh - Brookline will host a Grand Re-Opening celebration on Saturday, February 7, 2004 for the Pittsburgh community.

The festivities will begin at 10 a.m. with a ribbon cutting. Tours, refreshments and activities for children and people of all ages are also being planned to commemorate the occasion.

Located in the heart of the community at 708 Brookline Boulevard, architects from Loysen + Kreuthmeier transformed an ordinary storefront into a bright, airy, and welcoming library with modern amenities and conveniences. With these renovations the size of the library nearly doubles.

In addition, the Library has made an application for LEED-certification of this building. Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh has chosen to use the US Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED™) building rating system as part of its effort to renovate and modernize the Brookline library. LEED puts a premium on constructing buildings with superior interior air quality, access to views, daylight and natural ventilation.

Features of the $2.9 million renovation include:

  • a lower level where visitors will find an enhanced Children's area and larger, public meeting rooms suitable for groups ranging from 30 to 50 persons

  • a light wall, skylights and bays of windows dramatically change the character of the space and support the Library's desire to provide welcoming and energy-efficient facilities

  • an Internet Café where library customers can check email, chat or surf the web

  • a new elevator has been installed and other ADA upgrades were completed throughout the facility

Marvel at the use of light and color throughout the space, get help from your librarians or check out a book or music CD using the new self-checkout system at Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh - Brookline. For more information, please call 412-561-1003.
