Printing presses worked overtime in late nineteenth-century England, providing both reading matter and suggestions for how to choose among the offerings. Robin Hoffman, a PhD candidate in the English department at the University of Pittsburgh, will connect Doyle’s first audience for his Sherlock Homes stories with British reviewers’ many published responses. After they helped to spread the detective’s fame, contemporary critics also worked to explain his popularity among the reading public of the late Victorian era. This talk is presented in support of the Undershaw Preservation Trust, which is working to save Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s former home in Hindhead, Surrey, UK.
