- 5:00 PM
Does fame have a history? What makes someone a celebrity? Laura Engel, Associate Professor in the English Department at Duquesne University, will trace the emergence of celebrity culture back to the celebrated and notorious actresses of the eighteenth-century, when practices of self-promotion mirror contemporary ideas about marketing, framing and selling the elusive self. Specializing in eighteenth-century British Literature and Drama, Engel is the author of Fashioning Celebrity: Eighteenth-Century British Actresses and Strategies for Image Making and has published on topics such as fashion, actresses, celebrity culture and Jane Austen.
