Building One Volunteer Community : A Look at Generations & Volunteerism

Monday, August 27, 2012
9:30 AM - 3:30 PM

This workshop is designed to provide insight into methods used to recruit, manage and retain a diverse mix of volunteers for your organization. Attendees will learn the unique characteristics of different generations, like the Baby-boomers, Gen X and Gen Y. How the members of these and other generations think, communicate and interact with the world around them presents challenges as well as rich opportunities for volunteer managers. This is a hands-on working workshop with time to share ideas and concerns. Come ready to learn, think, share and participate.

The speakers include Randy Detweiler and Sylvia K. Lynn: Randy has worked with the senior population of Allegheny County for 20 years. As the first Provider Relations Specialist for Senior Services at Jefferson Hospital in the mid-90s, Randy increased the provider network to 450 providers. For the past 15 years, he has worked for the award-winning Highmark PALS (People Able to Lend Support) Program. In addition to being a member of Volunteer Administrators of Southwestern Pennsylvania (VASP), Randy is also an active member of the Society of Directors of Volunteer Services. Sylvia is a retired teacher and has also been a Certified Dietary Manager and a Volunteer Coordinator. An active community member, she served for 10 years on a school board, and volunteered with various nonprofits such as the Girl Scouts and The Alliance Against Drugs. Sylvia is currently a board member with Anchorpoint and a member of VASP.

There is a $30 per person fee to attend this class. Payment is made at the door with either cash or a check made payable to Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh. The fee includes a light continental breakfast. Space is limited and registration is required by calling 412-622-6277.
