Ralph Munn Creative Writing Contest Poetry Workshop w/Pittsburgh Poetry Collective's Young Steel Poetry Slam Group

Join us for introductory workshop sessions on slam poetry, with representatives from Young Steel, part of the Pittsburgh Poetry Collaborative. Learn about and practice slam-style poetry. All skill levels welcome, regardless of previous experience with slam.

Top submissions will be published on Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh's website, clpteensburgh blog and in this year's Ralph Munn Creative Writing Anthology, a book of creative work that is distributed to all Allegheny County libraries. Authors will also be invited to a special red carpet event on August 1st where the top winners in each writing category will be announced.

The Ralph Munn Creative Writing Contest accepts poems of any form, including, but not limited to, free verse, sonnets, villanelles, sestinas, slam-style poetry and narrative poetry. Judges will consider exemplary clarity, economy and freshness of language, use of sound and rhythm, complementary nature of the form and content of the poem and ability to evoke an intellectual or emotional response. Poetry submissions may not exceed 2 pages in length.


Contest Rules:
Contest is open to all high school students (grade 9 – 12) in Allegheny County.

- No more than one (1) entry from each category per person will be accepted.
- All submissions must be original work.
- Each entry must include a contact sheet listing title of entry, name, address, phone number, age, grade, school and category. Entries must be saved in Microsoft WORD .doc or .docx format.
- Poetry entries must be two (2) pages or fewer.
- Short prose entries must not exceed 5,000 words and must be double-spaced.
- Screenwriting entries must not exceed 15 pages.
- Teachers may not submit work for a group or on behalf of students.
- All entries are due by May 1, 2013. All authors will be contacted by July 1, 2013.
