Six Early Learning Skills

Learning to read begins before your child enters school.

Children can start learning to read from birth by using six early literacy skills. It's never too early to help your child get ready to read.

The six early learning skills are:

  1. Vocabulary
    Knowing the names of things.
  2. Phonological Awareness
    The ability to hear and manipulate the smaller sounds in words.
  3. Print Motivation
    Having an interest in and an enjoyment of books.
  4. Print Awareness
    Noticing printed words everywhere, knowing how to handle a book and how to follow the words on a page.
  5. Letter Knowledge
    Knowing that letters look different from each other and have different names and sounds.
  6. Narrative Skills
    The ability to describe things and events and tell stories in sequence.
