Online and Downloadable Language Programs

Learn Chinese, Russian, Spanish, and a host of other languges, or improve your ESL skills, with Mango's interactive web-based lessons.

Overdrive also offers downloadable language programs. To access the free software, set up an account, and browse the collection of available OverDrive titles visit http://carnegie.lib.overdrive.com/.

 

Free Online Language Resources

  • Annenberg Media
    Free language instruction videos, all courses frequently used in high school and college classes, for English, French, German and Spanish. A one-time sign-up is required.
  • BBC Languages
    Free online audio and video short courses plus links to some TV shows in the language of study that broadcast online, a learning log, and other added features. Content varies by language.
  • Byki Express
    Sign up to receive free software to download. Over 64 languages with flashcard-based lessons. Deluxe content available for a fee.
  • iLoveLanguages
    A collection of more than 2400 language-related Internet resources, ranging from online language lessons to translating dictionaries, to schools and translation services. For language learning, select the "Languages" tab, then "Language Lessons" from the menu.
  • Italki
    Find language learning partners, teachers, groups, courses and more with this free collaborative site. Resources available for over 90 languages.
  • Live Mocha
    Free language learning lessons, enhanced with social networking options, such as practicing with a native speaker online. Additional fee-based content is also available.
  • My Happy Planet
    A free online language learning community offering the opportunity to learn through live chat, messaging, videos, and lessons developed by members.
  • My Language Exchange
    Find an online language exchange partner, lesson plans and more.
