Books About Books

Any bibliophile will agree that a book which reveals the story of books or authors or libraries will probably be an awesome read!  These books often contain elements of mystery, romance, history, and/or the paranormal.  There are wonderful books for children and many superb tales for teens.  What follows, my dear bibliophiles, is a partial list of my favorites for adults. If you haven’t read these, give them a try!

The Bookman's Tale: A Novel of Obsession

Shattered by the death of his wife, a modern American bookseller, Peter Byerly, travels to England to seek some degree of solace as he searches for rare books.  In a remote country village, he discovers a Victorian era manuscript that contains a portrait of his wife.  Peter pursues an intricate trail to discover the origins of the painting.  This search ultimately leads to an even deeper literary mystery:  who was the actual author of Shakespeare’s plays?

A Discovery of Witches

A powerful witch, an ancient vampire, and the mystery of a missing manuscript that brings together these two natural foes.  Witches and vampires never collaborate, they never share their secrets, and they certainly never fall in love.  Meet Diana Bishop, a spell bound American witch, and Matthew Clairmont, a physician, a DNA specialist, a rare books collector, a wine connoisseur, and a 1500 year-old vampire.  Together Diana and Matthew must join forces to find the lost Ashmole 782 manuscript and unlock its secrets.  This is the first in a trilogy, and you will want to read all three!

Ghost Stories of an Antiquary

Written by British antiquarian, Montague Rhodes James, early in the last century (1904 and 1911), these collections of macabre short stories are chilling.  They relate the tales of a lost book, art work, or ancient object which when discovered will lure something evil from beyond the grave.

Warning:  Do not read these tales alone.
