Ever wondered what lead an author to write the book you just read for your book group? Or what the facts are behind that historic novel they selected? Struggling to come up with discussion questions when you host your next meeting? Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh – Main’s got your back. Let us help you prepare for your next book discussion through Book Group Connections.

We offer a free service to local book groups that provides background material to help bring your discussions to life. Each Book Group Connections kit includes one copy each of various author biographies, author interviews, book reviews, discussion questions and other items pertaining to your book.

Here’s how it works:
If you’re interested in receiving a kit for a particular book, call the New and Featured department at the Main Library at 412-622-3151 or email us at newandfeatured@carnegielibrary.org. We need to know the title of your book, the date of your discussion and the address for mailing the kit. In order to accommodate requests, we prefer to have a minimum of two weeks prior to the date you’d like to receive the kit. You’ll need some time to read through it before your discussion as well, so ultimately three weeks before your discussion is ideal. We do charge $5 to cover the cost of mailing the kit to you. If you prefer, you can pick up the kit at the Main Library for no cost, or we can email you links to relevant materials.

Looking for a title to suggest to your book group? We have you covered on that one, too. Our librarians are happy to recommend good titles for discussion and also share titles that have been popular with other book groups.

Finally, if your book group would like to get library copies of the title you’re reading, we can help with that process. Our staff can arrange to hold books at the Main Library for participants to pick up individually. There are factors to keep in mind for this service to work. For instance, new books may have waiting lists and not be available when you need them, or we may not have as many copies as your group may need. If your group is interested in pursuing this option, please call us for further information.

If you have questions about Book Group Connections or would like to participate, call Terry or Joanne at 412-622-3151.
