Betty Cruz has developed citywide initiatives for Pittsburgh Mayor William Peduto, managed major accounts for a national nonprofit dedicated to building playgrounds across the U.S., and supported public relations for global brands representing a wide range of industries. She has extensive experience in community outreach, communications, partnership-building, and program management – spanning over nearly 20 years.
As Deputy Chief of Special Initiatives for Mayor Peduto, Betty led the strategic development of numerous mayoral priorities including: Welcoming Pittsburgh, a comprehensive plan to build a more welcoming experience for the city’s immigrant community, and Live Well, a wellness agenda focused on increasing access to affordable healthcare and expanding participation in meals programming for youth. Through her deliberate implementation of each initiative, Pittsburgh has been recognized as an emerging model city for its welcoming and health engagement efforts.
In September 2016, Betty launched Change Agency, a social enterprise business to advance civic initiatives in our region including its flagship project: All for All, a countywide immigrant inclusion initiative. Betty’s work was recently recognized by Islamic Center of Pittsburgh as a Humanity Day Honoree, The Incline as a Community Leader, Pittsburgh Magazine 40 Under 40, and she was one 40 leaders from around the world selected for Next City Vanguard 2017.
Originally from Miami, Florida, Betty is the daughter of Cuban immigrants and a first-generation college graduate. She holds a BA in History from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania and an MPA from the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public and International Affairs.
