Eliezer Kanal

Community Trustee

Dr. Elli Kanal is a software engineering manager at Google. His current work involves developing machine learning infrastructure enabling a wide range of product capabilities. Previously, his team focused on designing, developing, and transitioning new AI-based product offerings in a wide range of applications, including healthcare, finance, retail, public sector, and media. He has also led the Cloud AI public sector engineering team, as well as led a biomedical industry research partnership. 

 

Dr. Kanal received his PhD in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Pittsburgh studying signal processing techniques for detection of deep brain neural activity, and the application of these techniques to learning and addiction. After completing a postdoctoral fellowship at Carnegie Mellon University on time series processing techniques for neural imaging, he entered the workforce as an Associate Vice President at PNC bank managing the corporate credit risk portfolio. He entered technical management at Highmark, Inc., where he led the Automation and Reporting department for the Operations division. He subsequently transitioned to working with the DoD at the Carnegie Mellon University’s Software Engineering Institute, leading efforts to apply machine learning technology to cybersecurity applications for a wide range of DoD applications. Areas of effort included malware reverse engineer, network security, vulnerability detection, and static and dynamic code analysis, among other areas, as well as leading SEI’s blockchain research program.

 

Dr. Kanal and his wife currently live in the Squirrel Hill neighborhood of Pittsburgh, PA, where they have raised five wonderful children.
