Best Books for Babies Diaper Distribution: Local Families in Need Invited to Receive Free Diapers and Baby Book Bundle

Third annual event is presented by Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh in partnership with the Western Pennsylvania Diaper Bank and sponsored by First National Bank

Pittsburgh, PA  –   –

On Saturday, July 23, Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh will host a Best Books for Babies Diaper Distribution event in partnership with Western Pennsylvania Diaper Bank (WPADB) and sponsored by First National Bank, the largest subsidiary of F.N.B. Corporation, at the Library’s Hill District branch.

Families and caregivers with children aged birth through 18 months will be able to receive a Best Books for Babies 2022 book bundle and two packages of diapers (sizes 0-3). Each family may select up to two sizes of diapers while supplies last. An estimated 2,800 books and 40,000 diapers are expected to be given away during the event. Registration is not required.

“The Diaper Distribution event is a valuable opportunity to engage with local parents and families in Pittsburgh,” said Erin Zambataro, Coordinator of Children’s Services & Family Engagement at Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh. “It helps us to honor our mission of encouraging early reading habits through our Best Books for Babies lists, while providing essential resources to community members in need.”

Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh’s Best Books for Babies is a nationally acclaimed annual list of books handpicked by librarians and child development experts. The list is created as a guide to assist parents, teachers and caregivers in selecting quality materials to share with babies.

As the corporate sponsor for this year’s event, First National Bank is looking forward to supporting the Library and WPADB’s distribution efforts.

“Strengthening the communities we serve and improving the quality of life for our neighbors are central to First National Bank’s mission, so we are especially proud to be a part of this year’s Best Books for Babies Diaper Distribution event,” said Ronald Donatelli, First National Bank’s Pittsburgh Regional President. “The distribution of thousands of books and diapers through this sponsorship will provide major relief to Pittsburgh parents and caretakers and demonstrates our unwavering commitment to respond to local needs.”

Western Pennsylvania Diaper Bank, established in 2012, provides diapers to families of low-income or poverty levels in five Western Pennsylvania counties – Allegheny, Cambria, Fayette, Washington and Westmoreland. In 2021, WPADB provided 1.2 million diapers to families in need.

Partnering with organizations like the Library gives WPADB the opportunity to spread awareness and reach even more families and communities in need.

“We are so excited to be partnering with Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh once again on Best Books for Babies,” said Cathy Battle, WPADB Executive Director. “Diaper time is talk time and using these moments to read helps caregivers bond with their babies. With inflation and the steep rise in gas prices, Western Pennsylvania Diaper Bank is grateful to be able to support families with a supply of diapers and help them focus on what really matters.”

About Western Pennsylvania Diaper Bank

Founded in 2012, the Western Pennsylvania Diaper Bank (WPDB) is the only regional nonprofit organization focused solely on the distribution of diapers to low-income families. Additionally, the WPDB acts as an informal clearinghouse referring families to additional social service organizations as needed. A few highlights over the past eight years include expansion into three counties, (Allegheny, Fayette, and Westmoreland), growing from an initial six partner agencies to thirty-eight, distributing more than two million diapers at no cost to families in need, as well as, securing warehouse space and office space in three counties. Co-founder and Executive Director, Cathy Battle has received recognition for her organizational dedication including three consecutive Jefferson Awards, one of which she shares with her husband, the Rev. Phillip Battle.

The Western Pennsylvania Diaper Bank strives to bring public awareness of the diaper crisis in our region.
