Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh Celebrates Black History Month 2025: African Americans and Labor
The Library will honor the Black experience through book displays, resources, library programs and community events happening this February and throughout the year!
This year during Black History Month Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh focuses on the various and profound ways that work of all kinds intersect with the collective experiences of Black people. Work is very much at the center of Black history and culture. Learn more through book displays, resources, playlists, library programs and community events happening throughout CLP locations in February and beyond.
A directory of special events, reading and genealogy resources, staff picks and programming for kids, teens and adults can be found at carnegielibrary.org/blackhistorymonth.
Patrons visiting the Library’s website can also enter for a chance to win one of three gift cards from local Black-owned businesses. Winners will be drawn at the end of February 2025 and will be contacted the first week of March to claim their prizes.

An Afternoon with Author Frederick Joseph

Join us for a special Black History Month author event with New York Times bestselling author Frederick Joseph! Joseph is the author of The Black Friend (2020) and Patriarchy Blues (2022), as well as the author of Better Than We Found It (2022) and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever – The Courage to Dream (2022). He was recognized for the International Literacy Association’s 2021 Children’s & Young Adults’ Book Award, is a 2019 Forbes “30 Under 30” list-maker for marketing and advertising, an activist, philanthropist and a poet. Joseph was also honored with the 2023 Malcolm X and Dr. Betty Shabazz Vanguard Award, the 2018 Comic-Con Humanitarian of the Year award and is a member of the 2018 The Root list of “100 Most Influential African Americans.”Book signing to follow. Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh welcomes Kelvin Watson, Executive Director of the Las Vegas-Clark County Library District, as this year’s Vivian Ann Davidson Hewitt guest lecturer. In his role, Watson oversees 25 branches run by 600+ employees and has brought innovative, award-winning leadership to Nevada’s largest library system. Regarded as one of the most highly respected thought leaders in the library industry, he is credited with expanding his customer base in multiple library management roles through outreach efforts to underserved and diverse populations. A Q&A and reception will follow the lecture. All attendees are invited to attend a reception following the lecture featuring hands-on activities and opportunities to learn about CLP’s career exploration resources.
This event is recommended for adults, as well as middle and high school students. This in-person event will be recorded for later viewing.
