May’s book selection is The Moor’s Account by Laila Lalami — An imagined memoir of the first black explorer of America and the danger-laden expedition to Florida. In 1527 a crew of six hundred men and one hundred horses sailed from Spain to Florida. Within a year there were only four survivors. As they journey across America, Old World roles of slave and master fall away, and Estebanico remakes himself as an equal and a remarkable storyteller.
