Sunday Afternoon Music Series Presents Richie Cole and the Alto Madness Quartet
In honor of Jazz Appreciation Month, world famous alto saxophonist Richie Cole and his Alto Madness Quartet will be performing selections from his critically acclaimed new release Richie Cole: Latin Lover.
After being awarded a full scholarship from Downbeat magazine to attend the Berklee School of Music, Richie Cole’s professional career began in 1969 when he joined the Buddy Rich Big Band. After stints with the Lionel Hampton Big Band and the Doc Severinsen Big Band, Cole formed his own quintet and toured worldwide, doing a great deal to popularize bebop and his own “Alto Madness” style. He has recorded over 50 albums, and is also a prolific composer.
A New Jersey native, Cole relocated to Pittsburgh in 2014, and has released several locally recorded and produced albums that have received wide acclaim, including a 4-star review in Downbeat magazine for 2016’s Ballads and Love Songs.
