I Have My Reasons…For Running

I hate running. I can’t remember a time when I didn’t. Back in high school, I was always one of the last to finish running the mile for the fitness test. I use the term running very loosely, as I walked most of the way. And back in my basketball days, I completed my sprints during practice. But lord knows, I didn’t like them.

And then there comes the day when the self-professed non-runner decides to run. Come May, I will be participating in the 2017 Dick’s Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon 5K. The reason: to raise money and awareness for Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh.

Why would I do that? I run because I believe in the power of the Library to help unify the Pittsburgh community. I run because I believe everyone should continue learning throughout their lives. And finally, I run because believe the Library helps people of all ages to be their best self.

So far, there are 15 people who will participate Marathon weekend on the Library’s team. From the Pet Walk to the Full Marathon, our team members have committed to participating on the Library’s behalf for a multitude of reasons. Like Emily, who is running in memory of her father who was a librarian. Or Bethany, who is running to support resources offered at the library that she has been utilizing since she was a child.

If you are like me and don’t love running, but you love the Library and are inspired to push yourself for this wonderful organization, consider being part of the team. There are opportunities for all fitness levels and ages! Registration is free (when you commit to a fundraising minimum to support the Library), and we will be with you every step of the way to help you reach your goals. Oh, and you’ll get a cool shirt for race day as well ;).
