Pittsburgh Photographic Library Collections

Abram M. Brown Collection – Early twentieth century railroad transportation photographs by Pennsylvania Railroad photographer Abram Brown.

Andrew Carnegie Collection – This collection of photographs features Andrew Carnegie throughout his lifetime and includes photos of Margaret Morrison Carnegie, Thomas Carnegie, Louise Whitfield Carnegie, and Margaret Carnegie Miller, as well as business associates and contemporaries of Mr. Carnegie.

Carnegie Benefactions Collection – This photographic record of the generosity and philanthropic deeds of Andrew Carnegie consists of 618 mounted photographs. Featured are images of club and organization resolutions, honorary degrees, medals, trowels from cornerstone laying ceremonies, ornamental caskets, and letters of gratitude that were bestowed upon Mr. Carnegie and, after his death, to Mrs. Carnegie. Originals are housed at the Andrew Carnegie Birthplace and Museum in Dunfermline, Scotland.

City of Pittsburgh Department of Public Works – Photos of street repair and replacement as well as sewer line projects from the 1920’s-1930’s time period.

Charles J. Jacques, Jr. Collection – Includes a large volume of photographs and newspaper articles pertaining to western Pennsylvania amusement parks compiled by the donor.

Cy Hungerford Cartoon Collection – Original sketches and ink drawings by Pittsburgh Post-Gazette political cartoonist Cy Hungerford. Cartoons cover the time period from 1927 through the mid 1970’s.

Frank E. Bingaman Collection – Early twentieth century news photographs from the Pittsburgh Sun-Telegraph newspaper. Varied subjects from human interest to sports.

Luke Swank Collection – Photographs from the brief 14 year career (1930-1944), of noted photographer Luke Swank. Subjects areas include the iron and steel industry, rural architecture, landscapes, and circuses are featured. Unavailable at this time.

Paul Slantis Collection – 1950-1960’s era photos from Pittsburgh Post-Gazette photographer.

Pittsburgh Album Collection – contains photographs from the book, “A Pittsburgh Album – 1758-1958”.

Pittsburgh Photographic Library Collection – This Pittsburgh Photographic Library Collection contains over 18,000 images from a photography project initiated by the Allegheny Conference on Community Development to highlight the redevelopment of Downtown Pittsburgh during the early 1950’s. The project’s photographers were assigned to specific areas and events in order to capture the transition from old to new, and the social and cultural activities surrounding it. Under the direction of photo documentalist Roy Stryker, the collection includes images from photographers: Harold Corsini, Clyde Hare, Esther Bubley, Elliott Erwitt, James Blair, Richard Saunders, and Regina Fisher. Images are being regularly uploaded to Historic Pittsburgh.

Stefan Lorant Collection – features photographs from the book, “Pittsburgh: The Story of an American City”. The photos in this collection are from the first edition of the book published in 1964.

Western Pennsylvania Architectural Survey/Charles Morse Stotz Collection – Includes drawings and photographs of noted buildings and the architectural heritage of Western Pennsylvania before 1860. A finding aid is available for this collection.
