Listen Up! Audiobooks Worth Hearing

It’s been a little over six months since I virtually committed to an Audiobook Challenge via our Eleventh Stack blog. I’m happy to say that I still love audiobooks, and have expanded my Goodreads library with many new titles.

Here are five that I still can’t get out of my head, all available on OverDrive with your library card!

The Breakdown (Audiobook)

Cass is having a hard time since the night she saw the car in the woods, on the winding rural road, in the middle of a downpour, with the woman sitting inside — the woman who was killed. She’s been trying to put the crime out of her mind; what could she have done, really? It’s a dangerous road to be on in the middle of a storm. Her husband would be furious if he knew she’d broken her promise not to take that shortcut home. And she probably would only have been hurt herself if she’d stopped.

But since then, she’s been forgetting every little thing: where she left the car, if she took her pills, the alarm code, why she ordered a pram when she doesn’t have a baby. The only thing she can’t forget is that woman, the woman she might have saved, and the terrible nagging guilt. Or the silent calls she’s receiving, or the feeling that someone’s watching her.

Distress Signals (Audiobook)

This gripping oceanic thriller includes three different narrators (Alan Smyth, Bronson Pinchot & Suzanne Toren, respectively) and will make you seriously reconsider taking a cruise…

When Adam’s girlfriend fails to return from a business trip, he sets out to find her – putting him on a collision course with a deadly predator who may have found the perfect hunting ground. A deeply compelling, cleverly plotted thriller in the vein of The Girl on the Train and I Let You Go.

Sunburn (Audiobook)

To quote a great colleague and friend who recommended this book to me:

“Keeping track of this cast of characters, with their dubious intents and hidden agendas, will keep you off balance until a very satisfying end. Guaranteed.” -Georgia Dawson

Too Bright to Hear Too Loud to See (Audiobook)

In this powerful debut novel, Juliann Garey takes readers inside the restless mind, ravaged heart and anguished soul of Greyson Todd, a successful Hollywood studio executive who leaves his young daughter to travel the world for a decade. Now he is able to give free reign to the bipolar disorder that he’s been forced to keep hidden for almost 20 years. The entire narrative unfolds in the time it takes him to undergo twelve 30-second electroshock treatments in a New York psychiatric ward. This is a brilliant literary page-turner and a poignant yet captivating inside look at mental illness.

The Woman in Cabin 10 (Audiobook)

If Distress Signals wasn’t enough to keep you out of the water or off cruise ships, this audiobook surely will!

Assigned to review an exclusive North Sea luxury cruise, travel journalist Lo Blacklock witnesses a woman being thrown overboard and is baffled when all passengers remain accounted for, a nightmare that unravels as Lo struggles to convince everyone that what she saw was real.
