Not Just “Another” Coming of Age Story

Jacqueline Woodson, an author mostly known for her Young Adult and Children’s literature, has created a simple and yet complex short novel for adults in this coming of age tale of August, a young African-American girl growing up in 1970’s Brooklyn, NY. We follow along with August’s memories about her mother and the development of her friendships with three other young women of color in her neighborhood.  Woodson’s style weaves a sort of poetry through her storytelling, as we learn about August, August’s family and friends, as they all try to manage their lives and relationships with each other in Another Brooklyn.
