Teen Picks to Celebrate Disability Pride Month 2025

During Disability Pride Month, Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh is committed to highlighting and celebrating the diverse experiences and contributions of individuals with disabilities. We recognize this month as an opportunity to raise awareness, promote acceptance, and advocate for the rights of people with disabilities. 

Throughout July, Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh will amplify the identities of those with visible and invisible disabilities. Check out the titles for teens on this list or find displays in your neighborhood libraries to discover more options!

Ariel Crashes a Train

Ariel grapples with her fear of her own mind and violent fantasies, until a summer job at a carnival leads her to new friends who help her discover her struggle with obsessive-compulsive disorder and find acceptance and support for her true self.

Verónica, a Peruvian-American teen with hip dysplasia, auditions to become a mermaid at a Central Florida theme park in the summer before her senior year, all while figuring out her first real boyfriend and how to feel safe in her own body.

Lilah is stuck in the middle. At least, that’s what having a hearing loss seems like sometimes — when you don’t feel “deaf enough” to identify as Deaf or hearing enough to meet the world’s expectations. But this summer, Lilah is ready for a change. When Lilah becomes a counselor at a summer camp for the deaf and blind, her plan is to brush up on her ASL. Once there, she also finds a community.

Told in two voices, follows the friendship between queer teens Casey, a singer who is grappling with sudden hearing loss, and soccer captain Hayden, whose Generalized Anxiety Disorder weighs on his every move, after they bond over their shared dream of a music career.

When eighteen-year-old Ellie’s Deaf boarding school shuts down, she attends a public high school where she struggles to adjust, but finds an ally in Jackson, a soccer player going through a disability diagnosis of his own.

Perley and Amandine are both starting their Junior year late. Perley was diagnosed with diabetes over the summer and has to worry about what this means, both for him and for his family’s finances. Amandine is part of a venerated family of vampires, but was turned much sooner than expected after a car accident nearly killed her. When their worlds collide as they make up the time they missed, their fast friendship quickly turns into something more
