Upcoming Program-alikes

Since the Library has paused in-person programming, we have organized “program-alikes” in a blog-post series. We spotlight programs and events provided by other Pittsburgh organizations that are similar to what you may be used to at Carnegie Library of PittsburghLet’s get started! 

If you miss our storytimes, try… and have already binge-watched our storytime videoswe recommend… Story Walks 

This is an offline, outdoor activity that you can do with the entire family. A story walk includeprinted out pages of a book that are sturdily set into the ground. Therefore, you are able to read a story while you walk around your neighborhood park or trail!  

Here is list of the Allegheny County libraries that are participating and the parks that include these story walks:

If you miss our film screenings, try Mt. Oliver Movies on Main. Mt. Oliver is bringing movies to Main Street in the Brownsville Road Business District on the last Friday of the month. The movie will play outside of the Borough Building for an outdoor, socially-distanced event.  

The event is free, and a free slice of pizza from Maietta’s Restaurant will be waiting for you!  

Enjoy a showing of The Goonies on Friday, July 31 at 8:00pmThe address is 150 Brownsville Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15210.  

Maximum occupancy is 50 people, so please register for the showing through Eventbrite here 

As a reminder, you can always stream favorite television series or download a classic movie with Hoopla or Overdrive. Visit our website here for instructions and support using these platforms.  

If you miss our cooking classes, try the How to Make Sourdough Starters virtual event hosted by C.C. Mellor Memorial Library & Crust Worthy Bakery.  

This free event takes place on Wednesday, August 12, 2020 from 6:00pm7:00pm.  

The program is hosted by Chloe Newman, the owner, founder, and head-baker of Crust Worthy. The hour-long event will cover the basics of wild culture, such as how to feed and care for it, along with the basic use in recipes and long-term storage options.

If you miss book discussions and guest visits, try… Lit Fridays 

 hosted by the August Wilson African American Cultural Center. As described on their website, “Lit Fridays is a literary-focused, virtual salon featuring conversations and guest performances.”  

The event takes place on the last Friday of each month at 6:00pm via Facebook Live and Zoom Webinar.  

The next Lit Friday is on Friday, July 31 @ 6:00pm featuring the Dominic Chambers Studio Tour with Kilolo Luckett. The guests in August include George Nelson and Fahamu Pecou, and September’s guests are Mikeal Owunna and Jari Bradley.

If you miss our wellness programs, try… Yoga in The Park. The Counseling and Wellness Center of Pittsburgh has partnered with multiple Pittsburgh yoga studios and City Parks to host yoga in Allegheny Commons Park.  

This is a family friendly and all levels yoga event. It is free and takes place Saturdays at 10:30am through August 29th
