Drive Time French: Beginner Level

Are you interested in learning a new language?  According to the Living Language website, their method has been a proven and effective language learning instruction for over 65 years. Using techniques originally developed for the US State Department, the Living Language Method follows a four-point approach from building a foundation of essential words and phrases, advancing to full sentences and conversations, practicing with recall exercises aimed at both short and long term memory and developing practical language skills to equip the learner in any situation.

Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped offers several titles from the Living Language collection. One of them is Drive Time French: Beginner Level, DB 87039.

Without any prior knowledge, you will be able to learn the basics of French – first and foremost being the masculine/feminine differences, when to use and how to say things like un, une, le, la, l’, and so on; things that you would see while you’re out driving so you’re learning about trucks, cars, bicycles, big and small sizes, houses, and some colors, as well as the days of the week and time.  Each section is broken down with lots of opportunity for you to repeat the French words. You also learn how to string some sentences together.

Here is an excerpt from the book:

  • Est-ce que vous êtes libres vendredi prochain? C’est l’anniversaire de Nathalie.
  • C’est impossible; je vais à un match de basketball. Et le match ne finit pas avant 21:30.
  • Bon, rendez-vous chez moi, samedi à 10 heures.
  • Gérôme, tu achètes un gâteau?
  • D’accord, j’achète un gâteau au chocolat. Est-ce que j’apporte une bouteille de champagne?

Now écoutez et répétez!
