Quality Time for Grandparents and Grandchildren at the Library

If you’re one of the 100,000 grandparents raising a child in Pennsylvania, you might be looking for some fun – and free – activities to do with your little one. The New York Times reported families spent an average of $958 on summer expenses in 2014.

Grandparents or caregivers who want to make the most of their time spent with their most beloved family members without breaking the bank should consider exploring Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh. At the Library, families can create lifelong memories while also engaging in educational experiences that aid in childhood development.

CLP holds multiple events and programs each day across our 19 locations. From games, crafts and activities to reading or learning a new skill, we offer a diverse range of fun.

Here is a round-up of some of our most popular programs:

Storytime is a fun activity for the whole family, helping children expand their vocabulary, exercise the imagination and develop important social and emotional skills. Options are available for any and every learning style including Sensory Discoveries, designed to engage all senses for children with developmental disabilities.

Little Learners has children immersed in the world around them through play and exploration, with everything from blowing bubbles to discovering new ways to move to the music. Children will use their imaginations, bond with their family and develop social skills.

Teen Labs makes teen dreams come true. Whether learning how to sew with a sewing machine, recording music in a recording studio or taking photos with a DSLR camera, our labs help teens work on individual projects that interest them the most.

Children’s Play Spaces are brand new to the Library. We partnered with the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh to build stimulating play areas in eight of our locations that aid kids in talking, singing, reading, writing and playing, or the five foundational activities for early childhood learning.

Would you rather spend quality time at home? No problem! CLP offers eResources for families so you and your grandchildren can read your favorite magazines, watch your favorite movies and more, all from the Library in your favorite “hang out” spot. Are you a fan of Netflix? Check out our BookFLIX, where you can read along to stories. Feeling creative? Families can create their own digital book. If you’re just getting started with CLP’s eResources and need guidance, we’ll be happy to get you up to speed on your next trip to the Library.

No matter what your child or grandchild takes an interest in, there’s something for every family at the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh. Check out our full list of events here.
