Her Stories: Teen Books by and about Girls and Women

March is Women’s History Month. It’s also when Pittsburgh Public Schools celebrate Literacy Week, March 4-8, 2024. This year’s theme is “A Celebration of Women Writers.”

While most people might think of biography or nonfiction as the best way to learn about history, fiction can reveal a variety of truths even as it focuses on creating a compelling story. The challenges that have faced young women throughout history—and the ways that strong-minded females have struggled to overcome them—make for engaging tales.

If sometimes the endings are a bit happier than in real life (or a supernatural element appears) that’s to be expected. After all, authors create the experiences and decide the fate of their characters. And it can be inspiring to imagine a successful solution to a very real problem.

So check out some of these titles, written by women about the lives of girls and women. Consider how you might have coped or just take a minute to be grateful that at least some things have changed for the better.
