Listen Together: Perfect Picks for an Assortment of Ages

I grew up listening to my (incredibly patient) mom reading aloud to my brother and me. From early favorites, like Harold and the Purple Crayon, right up through Pippi Longstocking and even The Hobbit (did I mention she was very patient?) we shared a book or chapter every night. (Which just might be why I wound up working at the Library, but that’s a different story.)

If your family likes listening together, check out the list of kids’ audiobooks we’ve put together on OverDriveThere are books intended for a variety of ages and even grown-ups will likely find something to enjoy and/or ponder. You can even decide to listen to an old favorite—rereading (or listening to) books you already know you like can be very comforting.

And remember, if you find that a book you’d like to listen to or read is already checked out, you can take a peek at the “Always Available list on OverDrive where you’ll find lots of options without a wait.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I think I’ll go call my mom to thank her again for all those hours of reading.

Happy listening.

The Hobbit

Tolkien’s famous saga, the prelude to the Lord of the rings, has all the ingredients of fantasy and adventure: dwarves, elves, goblins and trolls, a fearsome dragon, a great wizard, a perilous quest and a dramatic climax. At the center is the unsuspecting hero Bilbo Baggins, a home-loving unambitious Hobbit who is suddenly thrust into the biggest, indeed the only adventure of his life.
