Surrealist Landscapes

You’re at the opera house as ushers guide people to their seats. You’re cushioned on your seat, on the second floor, as you marvel at an opulent chandelier. You’re amazed at the site of the single steel rope which holds it firm in glorious suspension. As you stare at the array of jewels you notice one of them turns off and on. The closer you stare the more wonder overtakes you. It’s a frog with gems as eyes! Blinking rather insouciantly. The lights dim to signal the opera will shortly begin. And in that descension of a soft darkness, the frog stares at you; a ruby wink sends you off.

Surrealism is a way of taking usual objects, places, people and placing them in unusual circumstances. Think of Dali’s famous clocks in “The Persistence of Memory” melting away with curvatures of slumped, syrupy pancakes in an open, arid landscape.

These titles work in a similar logic. Brimming with dreamy and nightmarish moments, these titles are a fillip for our imaginations.
